Skulk in the shadows as master thief Garrett in The City, a dark fantasy world whose design was heavily influenced by steampunk and gothic aesthetics. You are, essentially, a darker version of Robinhood, taking on various missions focused on stealing from the rich.
The fourth game in the series, Thief was published by Square Enix in 2014, and it was a rebirth for the series. Developer Eidos Montreal took the game back to its core stealth roots and re-imagined it from there.
Garrett has returned to his hometown to find it under the control of a greedy, and ruthless tyrant called the Baron, and ravaged by a deadly plague. The poorest are hardest hit by both, and conditions are...uneasy at best.
As Garrett you decide to take advantage of the volatile situation to try to help The City’s populace, and embark on missions aimed at reducing the Baron’s power. For each level, or mission, you undertake there are a variety of paths you can take to your objectives. Some will require a more direct, lethal approach, while others make it possible to avoid confrontation.
While you can find success with the former, the game is designed around the stealth concept and rewards those that take full advantage of the mechanics. Hide in the shadows, study guard’s movements and look for opportunities to sneak past. Create distractions, and look for creative ways to get past difficult enemies.
Your blackjack can be used to render guards unconscious, while your collapsible compound bow can take targets out more directly or be used to distract. You also have a claw that you can use to grapple your way above and out of dangerous situations. The claw is very handy when you get spotted and the alarm is sounded and guards come looking for you.
How sneaky can you be? Grab your controller, fire up Thief and find out!
